Such conversion is carried out at high temperatures in an upflow or downflow reactor, with a fluidizing medium comprising a suspension of solid particulate catalyst in a reaction zone.
The fluidized catalyst cracking process with a catalyst bed as the reaction zone is a continuously operated conversion process in which a hydrocarbon-containing feed stream is contacted with a fluidized catalyst at the bottom of a riser reactor. The hydrocarbon-containing feed stream and a flow of regeneration steam are passed through the catalyst-filled riser and into a termination chamber. The flow of regenerated catalyst from the termination chamber is mixed with a flow of fresh catalyst and catalyst and feedstock inventory are maintained in the riser conversion zone. The hot, regenerated catalyst and spent non-catalytic gases are discharged from the termination chamber and the regenerated catalyst is passed into a separate regeneration zone for burning off coke. The regenerated catalyst is passed from the regeneration zone back to the catalyst preparation system where it is mixed with fresh supplies of catalyst components and subjected to other various treatments, after which the fresh catalyst is passed to the riser reactor for contacting the hydrocarbon-containing feed stream.
A catalyst preparer makes up the fresh catalyst for the fluidized catalytic cracking process from one or more sources of in-situ-produced coke and catalyst components. For example, the catalyst components may be added in the form of solids, such as solids of a crystalline aluminosilicate zeolite or an amorphous material. The catalyst components and coke may also be generated in situ by contact of a fluidizable material with a fluidizing medium, and the fluidizable material may be added to the process in the form of a particulate material, generally solid particulate material, but may also be in the form of a fluidized powder.
The catalyst for the fluidized catalytic cracking process is prepared from a slurry containing hydrocarbon-containing feed stock and a source of catalyst components. Such catalyst preparers are well known in the art. Fresh catalyst is contacted with hydrocarbon-containing feed stock for forming a slurry, and the slurry is pumped to a conversion
