David M. Berkowitz (born August 18, 1958) is an American politician who was the New York State Comptroller from 2001 to 2009. He was elected Comptroller in 2001 as the Working Families Party nominee, but was defeated in the general election by Republican William F. Thompson. He received 29% of the vote.
Early life, education and career
Berkowitz was born in the Borough Park neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York and graduated from the Satmar Lubavitcher Rebbe Yeshiva High School, later known as the Yeshiva Gedola in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
After high school, Berkowitz received a bachelor’s degree in computer science from the State University of New York at New Paltz. He then received a J.D. degree from the University of New York at Buffalo Law School and an LL.M. degree from the University of Pennsylvania Law School. Berkowitz worked as a lawyer, and was a member of the New York State Assembly from 1996 to 2001, representing the 68th Assembly District, which includes the areas of Staten Island and Brooklyn neighborhoods including Brighton Beach, Bensonhurst, Gravesend, and Coney Island.
In 2001 Berkowitz ran as a Working Families Party candidate for New York State Comptroller. He received 29% of the vote.
In 2003 Berkowitz ran for the Working Families Party nomination for Governor of New York. He received 7% of the vote.
In 2005, Berkowitz was again nominated as the Working Families Party candidate for Comptroller. He received 24% of the vote, and lost the election to William F. Thompson, a Republican, who received 50% of the vote.
After the defeat, Berkowitz was appointed Assistant Commissioner for Information Technology for the Office of the New York State Comptroller by Governor Eliot Spitzer. In 2007, Berkowitz resigned from the position of Assistant Commissioner to take a position as Chief of Staff to then-New York City Comptroller Alan Hevesi. In 2008, Berkowitz was appointed Executive Director of the Board of Directors for the New York State Center for Urban Science and Progress, and in 2009 was named an adjunct professor of Law at New York University School of Law, where he currently teaches Antitrust and Public Policy.
