Crying, or ‘the breakdown of coping mechanisms’

Taking a break in the BYU biology library
Every day, I push through the good days and the bad days, the hours spent studying, hours spent washing windows, and hours spent in class. I don’t take time for myself, maybe because of the way I’ve always been raised. It’s hard to know how much it all adds up. I’m angry at a lot of things. I’m angry at my life, at the world. Maybe there are others.
I have to be careful. I don’t have much time for grief. Maybe that’s why I think about it so much. I’m closer to tears than I’ve ever been in my life.
I remember my first crying session. I was eight years old, crying into my pillow because my best friend in the world moved away. It was a long, lonely day, because neither of our parents could make it to the mission at the time. My mother offered that she “just couldn’t get over it” either. That night, I cried a lot. And I cried my first real tears. It was a lot.
I woke up crying. My boyfriend was asleep, which was how it usually happened. But that morning, I woke up crying. I lay in bed, staring at the wall, in tears. I thought maybe I might know why people get “the blues.” So I thought about the blues. Maybe it was some sort of psychiatric disorder. That didn’t sit well with me.
